How can I relate the learning in my unit to students’ interests and goals?
A key factor in student persistence and retention is the ability of students to see how their study relates to their lives and future professional goals (Armitage & Krause, 2014, Thomas, 2012).
Strategies and Tips
Sometimes deeper engagement comes from relating class discussions to real world issues. Consider using in class topics that that relate to the real world and create opportunities for students to connect the curriculum with their own experiences and interests.
Let students know about notable WSU alumni in your discipline and their career paths.
Organise presentations or lectures by discipline researchers, industry representatives and alumni to show how the content of your unit directly links to their later professions.
Looking into deeper design
Consider how you can make assessments more relevant to students’ lives and cultural context (i.e. authentic assessments). You might want to consider integrating assessments such as e-portfolios into your unit, to highlight the professional/employability skills the student is developing in your unit.
